Background: 2018-2022
Franklin County for Peace emerged in the spring of 2022 from the Peace Task Force of Franklin County Continuing the Political Revolution (FCCPR), which formed in 2018. From its start the Peace Task Force included board members and activists from the long-established Traprock Center for Peace & Justice. As a calendar of annual events evolved, along with in person weekly vigils on the Greenfield Town Common, Traprock’s support increased. Now the organizing group that was the Peace Task Force has become a Traprock program with a new name: Franklin County for Peace. FCP will continue to work closely with FCCPR.
What we want, where we stand
War is not an Answer
We live in a highly militarized nation with a long history of conflicts, and remember the prophetic words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” In this context we note the obscene fact that amongst the twelve countries with the highest military budgets, US military spending exceeds the combined spending of the other eleven.
Franklin County for Peace encourages education and action to promote peace and prevent all forms of war. This includes countering all pro-war propaganda and organizing the public to support conversion of US military spending to programs that enhance true human security. Today humanity’s very existence is threatened by nuclear war and climate chaos. These threats can only be overcome by international cooperation that decreases the threat of conventional war, abolishes nuclear weapons, and turns our spiritual and material resources to the protection of all humans and our natural environment.
We welcome everyone to join us in this effort.
