Open House Celebration marking completion of the “Nelson Legacy Project“
October 27 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Open House Celebration at Nelson House
Woolman Hill Quaker Conference Center, Keets Road, Deerfield, MA
On Sunday, Ocotber 27, there will be a celebration marking the completion of the “Nelson Legacy Project, “ a two-year collaborative effort to repair and renovate the home of Juanita and Wally Nelson on Woolman Hill in Deerfield. The Nelsons, with help from friends, built their Woolman Hill home themselves and lived there for almost 50 years. Wally died in 2002, Juanita in 2015.
The Nelsons were legendary, much-loved figures who inspired and were loved by countless people, young and old, both here in the Pioneer Valley and nationwide. Veterans of the early Civil Rights Movement who were arrested and jailed several times for their refusal to cooperate with racial segregation and other forms of injustice, Wally and Juanita lived their lives in ways that reflected their steadfast devotion to nonviolence, simple living, community, and organic agriculture.
Inside their renovated home visitors will be invited to explore a preliminary display of photographs and writings of and by the Nelsons.
At 4 p.m. people will briefly gather for a special remembrance of Juanita and Wally, and to honor and thank the many volunteer builders, carpenters, helpers, and funders who generously donated the time, skills, and resources that made the completion of this project possible.
