Why Recreation & Transportation?
“When residents wrote our master plan three years ago, people saw improving recreational opportunities and enhancing how we get around, as key to improving our quality of life physically and socially, by getting outdoors and opening opportunities to jobs, daycare, healthy food, entertainment, exercise, shopping, and civic engagement. We want to share progress made, how you can get involved, and hear your thoughts.”
Nancy Hazard, Sustainable Greenfield Implementation Committee (SGIC), organizer of the event
RECREATION: “We Create Community Through People, Parks and Programs” is the Recreation Department’s slogan, and Christy Moore, who has headed up Greenfield Recreation department for a decade, has brought this slogan to reality. Come hear what her department has accomplished in the last few years as well as the Recreation Department’s 10-year plan to improve town-owned properties, as well as programs for kids and family and community events such as the winter carnival, triathlon, Riverside Blues, Brews & BBQ, and summer concerts at the Energy Park, and learn how you can get involved.
TRANSPORTATION: George Touloumtzis is all about equity, safety, choice, community and low environmental impact when it comes to getting around. In addition to sitting on the Planning Board and SGIC, he is active in the Greenfield Bicycle Coalition, and FRTA Transit Advisory Committee. The vision in Sustainable Greenfield is to help Greenfield develop a multi-modal sustainable transportation system for all. What this would look like would be well-connected and safe options to get around including walking, biking, wheel chair access, public transit and automobiles. It was residents’ hope that this range of options would make Greenfield healthier by encouraging physical exercise and community-engagement, while also reducing air and water pollution. George will talk about his excitement of the tremendous progress that is being made, as well as the challenges, and open the floor to people’s thoughts of how we can move forward to bring this vision to reality.
NEXT PANEL DISCUSSION MAY 24: The third and final panel of this series offered by SGIC will look at the economic and environmental benefits of moving toward a fossil-fuel free future.
